Tactical Marine Solutions’ principal, Dermot Loughnane, has the experience and specialist applied knowledge to understand your shipping needs.
A Master Mariner (1988), Dermot has the practical experience of 14 years at sea, combined with shore positions in the shipping and oil and gas industries in marine operations, chartering and business development.Before founding Tactical Marine Solutions he was Managing Director of the largest shipping company in Australia with 16 major vessels, 10 minor vessels and 1,000 employees. Earlier he managed the marine department of a Canadian oil company with freight responsibility of $100m annually, and formed and ran a high tech joint venture related to Arctic shipping in Russia.
Dermot’s hands-on experience spans such areas as:
- Background in Arctic operations both from the sea and from management ashore.
- Experience in conducting and managing research into marine and Arctic related subjects and in feasibility of new shipping services.
- Successfully integrating two shipping businesses, turning two money-losing entities into a profitable stable company
- Co-ordinating development of new shipping opportunities including the formation of a joint venture with a northern oil company for the import of oil into the circumpolar Arctic
- Using KPI’s and the Balanced Scorecard to raise the operating standards for a well aged fleet to be the equal of any modern fleet
- Changing a big company bureaucracy into a performance-driven entrepreneurial culture that ensured accountability and personal responsibility
- Developing a marine performancing (KPI) system to effectively monitor freight and expenses across an entire $100m+ chartering program
- Introducing a supply chain management program to reduce service supplier costs by 50% and freight costs by 10%
- Implementing a commercial system to run worldwide marine operations of one of the worlds largest shipping companies - integrating chartering, operations and accounting departments within head and external offices
- Managing research projects for mining and oil company clients examining resources transportation feasibility
- Projects for private and government clients concerning the risk of transporting hydrocarbons from the Arctic
- Organising a joint venture with a Russian company to support the development of resources in the Russian Arctic, using overlapping technologies
- Rewriting the ship handling and navigations section of Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters for the Canadian Coast Guard
- Dermot has a DMS (post graduate) in Shipping Management, University of Plymouth (1991), and an MBA (1997) University of Ottawa, as well as Master Mariner (1988) qualification.
